Kane To Defend Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship July 15 - 17 at St. Catharines Golf & Country Club

Acton, ONTARIO (May 27, 2002) - The Canadian PGA announced today that defending champion Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, P.E.I. has confirmed her participation in the 2002 Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship presented by Aquafina July 15 - 17 at the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club in St. Catharines, Ontario. The Championship is one of four events on the 2002 Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's TOUR.

"I look forward to coming home to Canada to defend my title at the 2002 Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship," said Kane. "Many thanks to Whirlpool, the Bank of Montreal and all our sponsors for their continued support."

This will mark Kane's tenth consecutive appearance in the annual event, which she has won five of the last six years. Kane won four consecutive championships from 1996 to 1999 and regained the crown last year at Glendale Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario where she won by a whopping ten-stroke margin over fellow LPGA TOUR player A.J. Eathorne of Penticton, BC.

Kane has never finished out of the top ten at this championship. Her worst finish was a tie for 8th in 1994.

The 16th annual competition features the top Canadians on the professional golf tours, female club professionals from across the country and a select group of amateurs.

This marks the 6th consecutive year with Whirlpool Canada as the title sponsor of the Championship.

Kane captured the 2001 Championship in dramatic fashion, firing a course record 63 at Glendale Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario to win by ten strokes over fellow LPGA TOUR player A.J. Eathorne of Penticton, B.C. Kane has played in the last nine consecutive Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championships.

The Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship is also celebrating its second season as the premier event on the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Tour.

Total purse for the championship is $65,000 with $13,000 and a complete set of premium Whirlpool appliances awarded to the champion.

The 36-hole stroke play championship is contested on Tuesday and Wednesday with Monday set aside for the pro-am. The Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship is one of five national championships staged each year by the Canadian Professional Golfers' Association.
